Le pont de la route de Mende, actuellement en travaux, sera-t-il pr\u00eat \u00e0 temps ? Ou se contentera-t-il de voir passer la bruyante caravane et le d\u00e9fil\u00e9 du peloton sur la D\u00e9partementale 17 ? On vous tiendra courant, car enjamber le Lez dans ce secteur du Fescau n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 chose ais\u00e9e au cours de l\u2019histoire.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">En effet, tout au long du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, <i>\u00ab\u00a0les chemins sont redress\u00e9s et \u00e9largis, les gu\u00e9s supprim\u00e9s et les ponts, trop \u00e9troits ou en mauvais \u00e9tat, remplac\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb<\/i>, explique Louis Gabard dans l\u2019ouvrage \u2018\u2019Le Lez, histoire et vie d\u2019un fleuve singulier\u2019\u2019 (1). Sans parler des crues qui emportent tout sur leur passage, comme celle de 1706 qui d\u00e9truit le pont en bois entre Montferrier et Prades, lequel est provisoirement substitu\u00e9 par une charpente soumise, elle aussi, aux caprices du cours d\u2019eau.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">En 1716, d\u00e9cision est prise. Les Etats du Languedoc chargent le directeur des travaux publics du Languedoc d\u2019\u00e9tablir un projet \u00ab\u00a0en dur\u00a0\u00bb. Co\u00fbt de l\u2019op\u00e9ration : 25 000 livres. L\u2019endroit est choisi, les plans sont trac\u00e9s, mais le terrain qui doit recevoir les cul\u00e9es du pont semble instable. L\u2019ouvrage est d\u00e9plac\u00e9, les plans refaits. Co\u00fbt suppl\u00e9mentaire : 8 500 livres. Malgr\u00e9 ce retard au d\u00e9marrage, le chemin neuf et le grand Pont Neuf (2) sont achev\u00e9s en janvier 1717, la r\u00e9ception des travaux se d\u00e9roule le 30 juillet de la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Entre 1781 et 1790, une inspection g\u00e9n\u00e9rale ne rel\u00e8ve aucun d\u00e9sordre. Preuve que ce pont construit en pierre de taille r\u00e9guli\u00e8re provenant des carri\u00e8res de Saint-Jean-de-V\u00e9das est d\u2019une solidit\u00e9 \u00e0 toute \u00e9preuve (3). <i>\u00ab\u00a0Ce pont a travers\u00e9 trois si\u00e8cles et subi de nombreuses crues sans dommage. Tout juste les armoiries des Etats du Languedoc figurant au-dessus de la vo\u00fbte ont-elles \u00e9t\u00e9 martel\u00e9es lors de la R\u00e9volution et les parapets d\u00e9plac\u00e9s pour \u00e9largir la chauss\u00e9e en rive droite\u00a0\u00bb<\/i>, \u00e9crit Louis Gabard. Si le pont a surv\u00e9cu aux coups de marteau, nul doute qu\u2019il r\u00e9sistera aux coups de p\u00e9dale du Tour de France\u2026<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><i>(1) \u2018\u2019Le Lez, histoire et vie
